Travis Hunter, a two-way standout for the University of Colorado, had to be rushed to the hospital for assessment during the third quarter of their game against Colorado State on Saturday night at Folsom Field. Despite the comeback, the University of Colorado was able to pull out the victory against Colorado State.
During the second quarter of the game, on an incompletion at the Colorado sideline, Hunter took an illegal hit to his abdomen. The school did not immediately reveal the reason why Hunter was called out of the game and sent to a hospital, but he did take the hit.
After the game, Coach Deion Sanders said that the “first thing I heard is that he’s going to be out a few weeks.” However, Sanders did not have any further information to share.
This season, Hunter had played practically every action for the Buffs, splitting time between wide receiver and cornerback for the offense and defense respectively.
Shilo Sanders, a defensive back, noted that the most unfortunate aspect of the team’s loss of Travis was that “it’s like you’re losing two players at once.”
When Hunter was hit during the play, the officials for the Rams called two fouls on their team. Safety After a late hit out of bounds at Hunter’s midsection, Henry Blackburn was called for pass interference, and nickel back Ayden Hector was given a penalty for unsportsmanlike behavior. When Hunter was taken to the hospital, the Buffaloes were down the Rams 21-14, but they recovered for a 43-35 win in double overtime to move CU to a perfect 3-0 record while dropping CSU to a winless 0-2 record.
Henry has been identified as an early candidate for the Heisman Trophy after playing both cornerback and receiving for the Buffs. Buffs quarterback Shedeur Sanders is also being considered for the award.
